A STERF-funded project ´Evaluation of turfgrass varieties for Scandinavian putting greens´ rediscovered the benefits of Velvet Bent. The results triggered a new STERF-project focusing on velvet bentgrass management practises for the Nordic countries. The experiences were summarized in this seminar.

The seminar speakers are involved in turfgrass research and management in different countries:

Jim Murphy, Rutgers University, USA
Tanja Espevig, Bioforsk, Norway
Benjamin Pease, University of Wisconsin, USA
Katerina Jordan, Guelph University, Canada
Michelle DaCosta, University of Massachusetts, USA
Keith Duff, R&A Course Committee
Arne Tronsmo, Norwegian University of Life Science, Norway
Trygve S. Aamlid, Bioforsk, Norway
Head Greenkeepers from Sweden and Finland
Kristiina Laukkanen, Finnish Golf Union

The seminar language was English.

Finnish Golf Union has 127 member courses. Today 14 courses in different parts of the country have velvet bent as the main species on their greens. The first trials and overseedings with velvet bent were made in the year 2000 with the variety 'Avalon'. The first pure velvet bent greens were established in 2002.
